My Favourite Roads Within a Day's Ride of Perth - PART 1: THE NORTH-EAST.
From East Perth at 9:00am.
  • This is a familiar one to most of you, but I'll never get used to four of the roads in this loop! They can be enjoyed at a relaxed pace or a bit more enthusiastically at dizzying speeds up to and including the speed limit!
  • The road surfaces vary from beaut to crappy (NO GRAVEL), but there's no getting away from the sweeping bends and the fast-(ish) straights.
  • Distance: ~300kms. Fuel: Plenty along the way.
  • Where to? It's a surprise :-)
  • Coffee break: Bakers Hill Pie Shop
  • A new venue in a familiar town.
  • Contact the Ride Leader, John Morrison (0415 198 183), for further information.

PS: Why not plan a ride on YOUR favourite roads within a day's ride of Perth and let me know about it!? -JM

Bridgetown Overnighter - with Ed and John, starting from Armadale at 9:00am.

Sorry everyone. This ride is off for now. The weather has defeated us.. :( JM
  • Join us on another tag-team-leader ride through the SW. We'll be starting at the carpark opposite MacDonalds in Jull St, Armadale and taking in the Fergusson Valley, Balingup - Nannup Rd and Graphite Rd on the way to Bridgetown.
  • Sunday's ride home will include breakfast at Boyup Brook, then along Mornington Rd, Nanga Road to lunch at Dwellingup.
  • There's plenty of accommodation in Bridgetown. We recommend Nelson's of Bridgetown and the cheaper option, the Freemason's Hotel:
  • Nelson's of Bridgetown - 9761 1641
  • River end of town
  • Better quality rooms
  • No bar
  • Expensive restaurant

  • Freemason's Hotel - 9761 1725
  • Middle of town
  • Cheaper rooms - a few with ensuite bathroom
  • Good restaurant
  • Bar

There are some great roads to be enjoyed on this ride and we're confident that the bridge near Kirrup has been replaced.

Annual Ulysses Memorial Ride
This is a "must do" event for Ulysses Members.
  • Ulysses Branches around the country, indeed round the world, dedicate the 2nd Sunday in September each year as a day of remembrance for those members who have "Ridden On". In most cases this is done in practice by all the Ulysses branches in a given area jointly or independently riding to a place where a short ceremony is conducted to honour those members. The tradition in the greater Perth area is for branches from as far north as Geraldton and as far south as Bunbury and as far east as Kalgoorlie to ride to the park at Lake Leschenaultia, Rosedale Road, Chidlow. There, someone conducts a short memorial service by the banks of the lake, at a monument dedicated by those branches as a permanent marker for this purpose.

  • Logistics:
  • For Perth Branch: Leave from BP East Perth at 9:00am sharp, for a short scenic ride.
  • Up to 10:15am -- Branches assemble in the carpark, cnr of Lloyd St and Gt Eastern Hwy (opposite Macca's and Mack1).
  • A Coffee Van may be parked at the start point, for those who need the caffeine.
  • 10:30 am -- Depart Midland
  • 11:00 am -- Arrive Lake Leschenaultia
  • 11:30am -- Service
  • 12 noon -- Lunch

My Favourite Roads Within a Day's Ride of Perth - PART 2: THE SOUTH-WEST. - with John Morrison
From East Perth at 9:00am.
  • This one is about the ride. The destinations are incidental and only serve to keep us caffeinated and nourished.

  • Distance: ~410kms (E Perth to E Perth). Fuel: Plenty along the way. We'll stop as required.
  • Coffee break: Waroona Country Cafe. Lunch: Lake Clifton Tavern. A table will be booked and waiting for us.
  • Contact the Ride Leader, John Morrison (0415 198 183), for further information.

Wandering, Brookton and The Lakes, and Fuel Miser Ride - with Ed Lowe.
Leave from East Perth at 9:00am.
This year we are combining this ride with an attempt to discover the most fuel efficient rider-motorcycle combination in the branch.

Ride details ...
  • This is a ride that takes in quite a few favourite roads.
  • Leaving East Perth we will travel to Wandering via, Pickering Brook, Canning Dam and North Bannister. Coffee will be at the Tanglefoot Winery just outside Wandering.
  • It's about 140 kms to Wandering. Try the scones and cream!
  • After coffee we'll head for Brookton via Pingelly. This road runs across rolling hills and has a lot of long sweeping curves through farm land.
  • Lunch will be at the Brookton Hotel. We stop for fuel here.
  • After lunch it's a short run to Beverley where we turn west and ride to The Lakes via Waterhatch Rd and the enjoyable West Talbot Rd.
  • All up the ride is about 350 kms, depending on where you live.

Fuel Miser details ...
  • This all began in 2014 when two of our esteemed members decide to settle their long running Kawasaki/BMW rivalry with a scrutinised test of fuel economy. The Inaugural Fuel Miser Run was staged on 24th August of that year.
  • Interestingly, the winner was neither a Kawasaki nor a BMW but a Harley Davidson 883 ridden by Cindy Robinson!?!
  • 2017's FMR will commence at our usual starting point in East Perth, where contestants will fill their tanks under the watchful eye of scrutineers.
  • After a variety of ride conditions (city, backroads, highway), and following the coffee stop at the winery, tanks will be re-filled in Brookton, supervised by the same scrutineers.
  • NOTE: Scrutineers will NOT pay for contestants' fuel.
  • After this, the ride will continue as planned, and eventually make a stop at The Lakes (new BP station and cafe). Here tanks will again be filled under supervision.
  • The bike/rider combination that has used the least fuel over the ride distance will then be determined and the results made known.
  • Scrutineers for the day will be Bill Westerhuis and John Gliddon.
  • Strict ride protocol will be used, ie staggered formation, no less than 3 seconds and no more that 5 seconds apart. Any contestant observed to ride outside of these guidelines will be disqualified, without appeal.
  • Scrutineering will take place between 0830 and 0850 only on Sunday 8th October at our usual starting point in East Perth.
  • For further information on the ride, contact Ed on 0419 902498. For Fuel Miser info, contact Bill on 9378 3383

  • From Armadale we head straight down the Albany Highway to Williams for morning tea and a fuel stop (distance from East Perth - approximately 162km).
  • The roads get more interesting (i.e. twisty) from here as we travel via Darkan to Duranillin where we pick up the upper reaches of the Blackwood River.
  • We continue to follow the mighty Blackwood to Dinninup and Boyup Brook.
  • From Boyup we turn right onto the Donnybrook - Boyup Brook Rd and travel another 45km to our lunch destination in Mumballup.
